Unit 3: Living Things
In this unit we are learning about four different aspects of living things:
1. Characteristics of living things. What is the difference between a living thing and a non-living thing? Why is a tree a living thing? Why is a book a non-living thing?
We have to learn six main characteristics of living things:
BORN GROW EAT REACT REPRODUCE DIE
We also have to know the THREE VITAL PROCESSES OF LIVING THINGS:
1. NUTRITION 2. REPRODUCTION 3. SENSITIVITY
2. Plants. We are learning the parts of a plant and what those parts do.
We are also learning about the three vital processes in plants (NUTRITION, REPRODUCTION, SENSITIVITY)
NUTRITION: Plants are AUTOTROPHIC.
REPRODUCTION
SENSITIVITY (How plants REACT to what is around them - looking for water with their roots, moving following the sun)
3. Animals. We are learning about the THREE VITAL PROCESSES in animals: NUTRITION, REPRODUCTION, SENSITIVITY.
Nutrition: Animals are HETEROTROPHIC
Animals can be CARNIVORES, HERBIVORES or OMNIVORES.
We are also learning about animal reproduction. Animals are OVIPAROUS (animals that reproduce laying eggs) or VIVIPAROUS (animals that reproduce giving birth to live young).
We are also learning about animal SENSITIVITY. Animals move away when they are scared, they can respond to touch....
We are also learning about groups of vertebrate animals and invertebrate animals.
4. Ecosystems.
An ecosystem is the living and non-living things in an environment that interact with each other to survive.
And finally a little bit about food chains....
